I shopped long and hard for a safe to put all of my Browning's in. Had them under the bed years and after a talk with myself, I realized that is pretty irresponsible. In addition, I rationalized that some of my more expensive Browning's belonged to my Dad and for that reason were irreplaceable, so I started to shop for a gun safe. So many choices out there. Shopped for over a month. Checking this and that. Could not decide. Some were just too far out of my price range, because despite it all, still not made of money. I went down to Costco and looked at the Bighorn, which was imported and had a cheap look and feel to it. I think I talked or chatted with every salesperson there at gunsafes.com and I finally got hold of Marty. I said I had it whittled down to two choices, one by Amsec and another by Liberty. Marty said I should also take a look at the Browning safe. Most of my long guns are Browning and I know the quality there, so I looked at this safe. I kept looking at all of these, including the Bighorn. Did I really want to spend three times the amount for the Bighorn than any of the others and the answer was pretty apparent, you pay for quality on a gun safe. Cutting corners on the manufacturing, means less cost and conversely, more dollars spent equates to a more quality safe. That’s just how it works with these products. All that being stated, I took the advice of many out there, get the biggest safe you can afford and you will spend a bit more for quality, but what is your collection really worth to you? My over and under alone is worth more than the safe, so everything in perspective...Now on to the safe. I chose the Browning. I liked the layout and the DPX system is awesome. Not a bunch of chipboard with carpet on it, but solid shelving that can be moved in several configurations with a rubberized top that protects and keeps anything from slipping you put on it. The door has more pockets than you can really know what to do with, but it seems like you can find a place for all your good Buck knives, spare magazines, whatever can get put into those. As well, there is a place for 9 guns on the door, so you don’t have to move everything around, to reach one of your favorites, it’s right there on the door, just grab one and go. Also, the door has a scope saver feature, which is an embedded pre-molded space for your scoped rifles, I have two in there and now I don’t have to take the scopes off…awesome. Great feature. Door is heavy, high quality and swings easily on ball bearings. The external hinges also mean a greater swing and it comes off if you want to move that safe easier. Another thing I really like is the corner bolts. Eliminates a point of weakness where a thief may start prying on. Electronic lock is awesome. Everyone said they can be a pain, but if you can read the directions, it works exactly as advertised. I got the black painted one, with gold lock, pointer design on the front, gold handles. We peeled the cardboard off of it and the driver who delivered it had just bought a Cannon and after we looked it all over and peeked inside, he said, “Man, I think I may have bought the wrong safe, that Browning is awesome.” The more I have it , the more I have to agree with his assessment. It’s heavy, with 10 gauge metal, continuous welded seams and that gold and gloss black, it’s a really nice contrast. Some of my buddies who have cheaper safes, ribbed me about spending too much, till they came over and saw it…that put an end to any doubts they had. Also wired for 110v inside, so no having to drill your own hole. Bottom line is I think that you can spend less and I know you will end up with a lot less safe and I think you can spend more, quite a bit more before you find the same quality of this safe for a reasonable price. If you are looking for a safe that is pretty enough to be in your living room, quality enough to help you sleep when you are on vacation and reasonably priced. I would definitely consider this Browning safe. I would also not hesitate to spend a couple extra hundred to get exactly what you want, because I can guarantee you that it will outlive you and you might as well get what you want and be happy with that rather than live with something less than you wanted for all the years you will own this safe.
